Debbie's Philosophy

Often people with disabilities are seen as having challenges; instead Debbie sees that we are challenged to find the gifts and talents in ALL people. Starting with the premise that people are not "mistakes" and remembering that ALL of us are made in God's likeness leads to the conclusion that finding the giftedness of people with disabilities will help better understand the world in which we live.

Since 1974 Debbie Wilkes (click here to go to my vitae) has provided quality support to individuals with disabilities in the area of education, transition to post-secondary education, employment, self-advocacy and interdependent living. Through systems change she has instituted innovative programming. In 1993 she established a Transition Program for students ages 18 to 22 which has been a model for districts throughout Texas. In 2006, through her collaboration with general education, she changed instructional programming for secondary students to increase student participation in the general education setting and introduced a specialized secondary program so that reading would continue to be a focus of instruction for secondary students.

As a statewide consultant in the area of special education instruction, transition, post-secondary education, employment and self-advocacy she has worked with students, families, school districts and employers to help individuals become connected to their schools and community so that they can achieve their highest potential.

Education and Transition Consulting

Time is running out!

What will happen when your child graduates from high school?
  • Is college an option?
  • Is employment an option?
  • What about housing?
What will happen when you are no longer there to provide support?
  • Where will the money come from?
  • Who will help make decisions?
It is never too early and it is never too late to begin the planning process!
